What is a brow lift?

A brow lift, also known as a forehead lift, is a popular option for individuals with poorly shaped or droopy brows. A browlift allows a plastic surgeon to change both the shape and the position of the aging or sagging eyebrow.

Does the entire brow get lower with age?

No. In fact, the medial brow or the inner brow may appear higher with age due to the hollowing of the soft tissues of the orbit. The lateral brow (the portion closer to the ear) on the other hand does tend to descend with age and can change the shape and aesthetics of the brow. As the lateral brow drops, it can give a tired appearance of the eyes.

Is an elevated brow more attractive?

Sometimes but not always. The shape of the brow is much more important to brow aesthetics than the actual position of the brow. If the brow shape is aesthetically pleasing and the position is low or high, the brow will look attractive. If the shape is poor and the position is perfect, the brow aesthetics will be poor.

What is the ideal female brow shape?

The ideal female brow shape tends to have a peak at the junction between the middle 1/3 and lateral 1/3 of the brow. In addition, the lateral brow is slightly higher than the medial brow.

What is the ideal male brow shape?

Similar to female in shape with the peak at the junction between the middle 1/3 and the lateral 1/3 of the brow. In contrast, an aesthetic male brow shape is often flatter and has a less dramatic difference in height between the lateral 1/3 and the medial 1/3 of the brow.

What are the most common brow lift surgeries?

The most common surgeries to shape and lift the brow are the endoscopic brow lift and the lateral brow lift, also called a temporal brow lift. A coronal brow lift was once a popular option but is rarely used in the modern aesthetic world due to obvious scars, sensory nerve deficits, and alopecia (hair loss).

What is an endoscopic brow lift?

An endoscopic brow lift is a brow lift that is performed with the assistance of a small camera (endoscope). It is very similar to a lateral brow lift but instead uses slightly smaller incisions. The benefit of the endoscopic brow lift is that it allows the surgeon to release and elevate the medial brow (closer to the nose) more easily.

What is a lateral brow lift?

A lateral brow lift, or temporal brow lift, is a procedure that aims to lift and reshape the middle and lateral brow instead of the entire brow. Using this approach, a surgeon can change the shape to a more youthful and attractive brow.

What are the incisions for a lateral brow lift?

The incisions for a lateral brow lift are typically in the hair line or in the junction between the wispy and thick hair. The incisions are several centimeters long and can sometimes be designed to go partially into the thick hair to be more hidden postoperatively. This approach avoids putting visible scars in the central forehead. Once healed, the incisions tend to hide well.

Is a deeper brow lift better?

A brow lift can be performed in different surgical planes. Going from superficial (closest to the skin) to deep this lift can be performed in the subcutaneous, subgaleal, and subperiosteal plane. This is a decision that should be made by your surgeon with what they are most comfortable with and what they are trying to accomplish. In my opinion, the largest amount of lift is accomplished with the most superficial dissection – the subcutaneous lateral brow lift.

Am I a candidate for a brow lift?

If you stand in front of the mirror and gently lift the lateral brow (the portion of the brow furthest from your nose) with two fingers and you like this appearance then you may be a candidate for this procedure. Individuals who are interested in a brow lift should be in good health and be fit for elective surgery. Patients should avoid smoking and nicotine-containing products that can affect blood flow and, ultimately, healing.

Can I have a brow lift and facelift in the same surgery?

Yes. These operations are commonly performed together as part of a comprehensive facial rejuvenation as long as both can be performed by your surgeon in an expeditious manner.

Can I have a brow lift and blepharoplasty in the same surgery?

Yes. These operations are commonly performed together during facial rejuvenation. These procedures can also be performed with a facelift as long as all three procedures can be performed in an expeditious manner.
